Chapter 1
Tori closed the door of the apartment as quietly as she could then stopped to listen. There was only silence from within and she let out a slow sigh of relief that she managed to get out without waking her boyfriend, Matt. He was still fast asleep at eleven o’clock on a Saturday morning, although that came as no surprise and it allowed her to escape his suffocating grip for once. That she was even thinking in terms of escaping from her own home these days made her shake her head, but she tried to clear the unpleasant thought away as she crept barefoot down the stairs of the building.
It was only when she got out of the door to the top of the front steps that she put her shoes on. She nervously glanced up towards the third floor window, but there was no sign of the man inside and she quickly made her way down the stairs and walked away. Her thoughts centered on her home life and relationship as she rode the bus to her destination, but in truth it was something she wanted to forget about, so she set her mind to concentrating on the passing scene out the window. When the bus approached the stop she wanted, she got to her feet and noticed a man glancing at her legs. She was suddenly glad she was alone and not with Matt. An obviously appreciative look like that from another man would get her in trouble, and it just brought her situation clearly into focus.
“Just enjoy the day,” she said under her breath.
The doors opened when the bus came to a stop and she stepped down to the sidewalk with the other passengers getting off. It was still a ten minute walk from where she was to get to her destination and she set off straight away. When she got to the mall, she joined the throng of people walking through the entrance. A smile spread across her face when she saw her two friends sitting on the wall surrounding the small fountain and she walked across to them.
“You made it,” Holly said.
“Sure I did,” Tori replied. “I wouldn’t miss out on a shopping trip with you two.”
“Let’s just relax and get a coffee first,” Melanie chipped in.
The smile returned to Tori’s face when she stared at the sunglasses her friend was wearing.
“It looks like you must have enjoyed some fun last night,” she said.
“I have to admit I did indulge in some partying,” Melanie replied with a grin.
She and Holly stood up and the three girls walked across to the elevators. They managed to get in the first one that arrived, but were crushed together in a crowd of people as they rode it to the very top floor. They saw the food hall was busy but not overly crowded when they walked in it.
“Grab a table and I’ll treat you,” Tori said.
She watched where the other two went to sit then moved across to the beverage stand in the corner of the hall. The line was short and she ordered three white coffees when she got to the front. As they were being poured, she got a tray and grabbed some sachets of sugar. She paid for the drinks after the cups were placed on the tray then made her way across to where her friends were sitting.
“Thank you,” Melanie said and ripped open one of the sachets straight away to put sugar in her coffee. She took a sip then let out a sigh. “I need the caffeine,” she went on and laughed.
“How much alcohol did you actually throw down your neck last night?” Tori asked with a grin.
“I’d tell you if I could remember,” Melanie answered and laughed before taking another drink.
“That’s not all you’re forgetting about,” Holly quipped.
“What do you mean?” Melanie asked.
“Don’t you remember kissing the cute guy?” Holly went on.
“I didn’t…” Melanie let out then paused as if she was thinking. “Did I?”
Holly nodded her head and laughed as Melanie cringed.
“Was he cute?” Tori asked.
“Melanie seemed to think so,” Holly went on. “Well… judging by how far her tongue was stuck down his throat, she did.”
Melanie squealed as she listened to the description of her brief encounter with a man she couldn’t even remember.
“I’ve got to stop drinking so much,” she said and laughed. “It will get me in trouble one of these days.”
Tori picked her cup up to take a sip of coffee as her two friends went on talking about their exploits of the night before. It sounded like fun, although it was something she hadn’t done in a long while. Holly spoke to break into her thoughts.
“You should come with us when we go again.”
“Maybe,” Tori answered although she knew she probably wouldn’t.
They continued to chat as they drank before eventually getting up to make their way out of the food hall. Walking across to the nearest escalators, they made their way down one floor then across to a clothes store.
“These are nice,” Holly said when she stopped at a rack of denim shorts.
“Going for the Daisy Duke style,” Melanie said as she searched through the shorts. “These would be perfect for you.”
“Yeah right,” Holly said when she saw her friend holding the smallest size. “I couldn’t squeeze my butt into that pair in a million years.”
She searched through the rack for the correct size then moved across to the fitting rooms in the corner of the store. Tori walked inside the small cubicle with her while Melanie carried on looking around at the clothes.
“Did she really kiss someone?” Tori asked.
“Yeah,” Holly said as she unbuttoned her jeans to take them off. “I dragged her away eventually before she really got herself in trouble.”
Tori removed the shorts from the hanger and held them out to her friend. Holly grabbed hold to put them on and stared at herself in the mirror.
“Fuck… these really do put my butt cheeks on show.”
“You do look hot in them,” Tori said.
Holly turned from side to side to look at herself, but eventually decided that she didn’t want the shorts. She removed them to put her jeans on and the two of them walked out to find their friend.
“You should definitely get this, Tori,” Melanie said when they walked up to her.
She held up the blue summer dress. Tori took it to hold next to her body and looked down.
“Too short,” she said.
“Same color as your eyes,” Holly said. “It will look pretty on you.”
“It’s on sale too at fifty percent off,” Melanie pointed out. “Try it on.”
“No, I don’t…” Tori started to say, but didn’t get the chance to finish.
Holly rolled her eyes as she grabbed Tori’s arm and the dress then pulled her friend to the fitting rooms. They went inside the same cubicle and closed the door.
“Well?” Holly said with a smile.
Tori le
t out a sigh as she loosened the button at her waist to let the skirt she was wearing slide to the floor. The top she was wearing had long sleeves and she was conscious that she didn’t want to expose the bruises on her arms, so she just grabbed the dress to try it on.
“Too short,” she commented again as she stared at her reflection.
“It does show off your pretty legs,” Holly commented.
Tori lifted a hand to sweep her dark red hair to the side so that it was spilling over one shoulder. She liked what she saw in the mirror, but knew it was something her boyfriend wouldn’t want her to wear, so she quickly took it off. When she was dressed, she opened the door to walk out of the fitting room and Holly followed as they walked across the store.
“You’re not getting it, are you?” Melanie said.
Tori shook her head as she hung the dress up on a rack.
“It’s nice,” she replied. “But the hem sits way too high on my thighs for me to get it.”
She saw the glance the other two girls gave each other and knew they were thinking she wouldn’t dare buy it because of Matt, but they kept their comments to themselves.
“I guess it’s up to me to splash the cash then,” Melanie went on. “Not in here though, so come on.”
Holly and Tori followed when their friend walked out of the exit and saw where she was heading. The lingerie store was one of Melanie’s favorites and it wasn’t unusual for her to buy something from it when they were out shopping.
“This is more like it,” she said when she walked inside and started looking around.
She browsed the racks and held items up to her body as she considered the options before eventually settling on a pink bra and panties set.
“What do you think?” she asked when she lifted it up to put it on display for the others.
“It won’t cover much,” Holly joked as she stared at the skimpy thong panties.
“That’s the idea,” Melanie said. “Come on.”
The three of them walked across to the fitting rooms and squeezed in one together. Melanie was quick to strip down to her underwear and tried the new set on over the panties and bra she was wearing.
“I think the guy last night would have liked you in that outfit,” Holly teased her friend.
“I think any hot-blooded guy would like her in them,” Tori joined in and laughed. “Come to think of it, I like her in them.”
“Yeah… I can see you pulling them off me with your teeth,” Melanie joked. “But do try to be gentle with me.”
“Shut up!” Tori exclaimed before the three of them collapsed into fits of giggles at the cheeky comment.
Melanie turned to the side to look at her butt and decided she was going to be the first to make a purchase. She took off the panties and bra to get dressed before they all walked out of the cubicle. They looked around some more, but eventually made their way to the serving counter.
“Is this all?” the older woman behind it asked and smiled.
“That’s it,” Melanie replied.
She waited for the sale to be registered on the checkout then handed over the money to pay for it. The three of them left the lingerie store and went in a few other places as they slowly made their way down to the ground floor of the mall. Holly eventually found a pair of shorts she liked and bought them, but Tori was empty handed when they eventually walked out of the main exit. Melanie looked at her watch to see it was just after three in the afternoon.
“Let’s get a drink,” she said.
“I thought you were giving up,” Tori pointed out.
“Some chance of that,” Holly joked.
“Shut up,” Melanie told them both and grabbed their arms to lead them away from the mall. They eventually ended up walking in a small bar just along the street. “We buy one round each then call it a day.”
The others agreed and Melanie walked up to the serving counter to be the first to buy three glasses of white wine. The other two went to sit at a table.
“Are you doing anything tonight?” Tori asked.
Holly shook her head as she spoke.
“After these drinks I’ll be heading home for a relaxing evening. What about you?”
“The same,” Tori replied.
Melanie arrived carrying a tray with three glasses, and over the next few hours they just sat and chatted as they enjoyed the wine. It was a struggle for them to get to their feet when the last drink was finished and they walked out of the bar to the twilight of early evening
“I didn’t realize we’d been sitting in there for so long,” Holly said.
“It’s after six,” Melanie replied when she looked at her watch. “I think I need to sleep.”
“I’ll see you two soon,” Tori said and smiled as she hugged her friends.
They parted company and she walked on her own towards the bus stop where she could catch a ride home. The darkness slowly descended to surround her when she got there and the enjoyment of a fun afternoon with friends slowly drained away at the prospect of going home to her boyfriend. A despondency settled over her that made her remain standing at the stop as the first couple of buses went past. She got on the third one that arrived and sat nervously as the journey progressed. A woman sitting opposite glanced in her direction more than once and she finally realized it was because she was incessantly tapping her foot. She made the conscious effort to stop doing it and just stared out of the window. The urge to stay on the bus and just go past her stop was strong, but she forced herself to get to her feet and walk to the door.
“It’ll be OK,” she murmured under her breath, but didn’t quite believe what she was telling herself.
Unlike her brisk walk away from the apartment that morning, her feet now dragged and she glanced at her watch to see it was after seven in the evening when she turned into her street. As she got closer to her apartment building, she glanced up to the third floor. There was no light on in the window and it gave her a flicker of hope that her boyfriend might have gone out.
When she got to the building, she walked up the front steps and went inside. The silence of the place unnerved her although it wasn’t unusual, so she moved to the stairs and began to climb them. She slowed her pace even more when she got to the third floor and moved towards her apartment. A glance either way showed there was no one else in the hallway when she got to the door, and she leaned forward to place her ear on the wood. As far as she could tell from listening, it was silent inside and she got out her keys to let herself in.
Closing the door behind her, she kicked off her shoes and hung up her coat. The slight relief came over her that the place appeared empty and she hoped her boyfriend got home drunk and not remembering she’d even been out that day. It was only when she stepped in the lounge that she realized she was mistaken. She shrieked at the sudden flare of light and put a hand to her chest as her heartbeat hammered.
“Matt,” she said when she saw her boyfriend sitting in a chair. “You startled me.”
He was wearing just a pair of shorts and she could see the way his fingers were drumming on the arm of the chair. A glance to the table beside him showed the empty paper wrapper and she knew he’d taken stimulants. He’d always explained it away that he needed them to give him the impetus to pump weights, but one glance at his flabby physique showed that his training regime didn’t amount to much. It didn’t mean he wasn’t strong, however, and Tori couldn’t contain the flare of apprehension when he got to his feet.
“Sneaking out of the house now, are you?” he let out in a hoarse growl.
“I didn’t sneak out,” she replied. “You were sleeping and I didn’t want to…”
“Don’t you fucking lie to me,” he barked in a louder voice to interrupt her words. “Where have you been?”
He took a step forward towards her and she instinctively moved away from him then realized her mistake when she glanced across the room. Matt was quick to move between her and the door and she knew that she would need to talk her way out of the situation.<

“I met up with Holly and Melanie for coffee,” she said in a quiet voice.
“Liar,” he yelled. “Tell me the fucking truth.”
“I am,” she insisted, but intentionally kept her voice calm.
The last thing she needed was to rile up her boyfriend, but it didn’t seem to work. Apprehension turned to fear as he closed in on her. There was nowhere for her to go and she tried not to show she was scared when she bumped into the wall behind her. It was almost impossible, though, and she cowered as Matt moved right in front of her. He lifted a hand in a threatening manner when he spoke.
“Tell me the fucking truth,” he repeated.
